Shanghai's best cheap eats

Recommended: Shenjianbao, Yang's Fried Dumplings

In business for 16 years and counting, Yang's shengjian are a mandatory stop on any shenjianbao eating tour.

The cast-iron fried dumplings come with a crispy, golden-brown crust on the bottom and a thin mantou skin speckled with black sesame seeds. Owner Yang Lipeng learned her shengjian recipe from her grandfather, a dumpling chef who worked for decades at Meilongzhen, one of the oldest restaurants in Shanghai.

Yang's dumplings are the soup bombs of the shengjian world.
