Kenneth Branagh Talks 'Thor,' Sequels And The Marvel Movie-Verse

'They definitely were aware and for the idea that every movie has to work on its own right,' director tells MTV News of Marvel films.

"Thor" thunders into theaters next week, adding yet another chapter to Marvel Studios' big-screen universe and bringing audiences that much closer to next year's superhero team-up extravaganza, "The Avengers."

As part of this year's Summer Movie Preview Week, MTV News spoke to "Thor" director Kenneth Branagh about taking on Marvel's hammer-wielding hero and the daunting task of integrating the god of thunder into the same world occupied by Iron Man, Hulk and — in a few months — "The First Avenger" himself, Captain America.

MTV News: So let's go back to the very early days of this project. Everyone was surprised — and pleasantly so — when your name was first announced as "Thor" director. Why did you take the job? Why did this project appeal to you?

Kenneth Branagh: I suppose it was partly that I wanted to surprise myself. I was happy to surprise a few other people. It's nice to challenge your own sense of what you think you might be able to do and other people's preconceptions. I thought that it was a total breath of fresh air, and the freshness about the whole adventure was something I'd enjoy very much. But you can't do it for just those reasons. I was drawn to the character and the story and the understanding that it would happen on an epic scale. The size of it, and the chance to tell a big — and hopefully popular — movie on a large scale was just such a very, very exciting possibility.

MTV News: Much like Iron Man was in 2008, Thor isn't all that well-known prior to his big-screen debut. One would think that this, along with his magical, godlike powers and origin story, makes the character an even harder sell for mainstream movie audiences. How did you approach that challenge?

Branagh: There's no question that everybody at Marvel felt that way, and I would have to agree with them. Although, nearly 50 years of Thor comics say there's a real fanbase for the character out there, and he's interacted with the other members of the Avengers in the comics many times. But there are many challenges to laying out a Thor origin story and letting it interconnect with the rest of the Marvel universe, which I, as a cinema viewer, am very intrigued by and enjoy. The happy coincidence was that I was certain that a large part of the movie should take part on Earth. For me, the story being partly on Earth was absolutely crucial, regardless of whether it had to fit into any other kind of movie, in order to maximize a number of things — chiefly, the humor. In the two or three months while we were talking about whether we want to make the same type of picture, that was one of the key conversations, and thank god we agreed.

MTV News: When we spoke with the "Captain America" writers, they mentioned that the central story came first, and then there was a point when they went back over the narrative and added references to the greater Marvel movie universe where appropriate. Was that the same for "Thor"? How did you handle the need to connect "Thor" with the other Marvel movies?

Branagh: Some of that was planned upfront, but to be honest, I never had to think about it too much myself, because my job and my value to the project was to keep the Thor story front and center. The rest would just organically start falling together. Sometimes it would be a case — particularly with names and things — where one could do a little blending in various places that would intersect. ... But I have to say that at no point did I feel like I had to try and guess where I was fitting into in some great Marvel wall chart of all of this. They definitely were aware and for the idea that every movie has to work on its own right — and not to assume anything — and once it's feeling secure and tight, we can have the fun stuff sprinkled throughout, and hopefully it will add some value.

MTV News: Well, the cat's out of the bag as far as Jeremy Renner's debut as Hawkeye in "Thor," so what else can you tell us about working with him and that character's role in Thor's universe?

Branagh: I'm not able to divulge anything in great detail, but the time I did spend with him was excellent. He's prepared, smart, very detailed, and what he's going to bring is something extremely interesting. He's an unusually big fan of the comics and knows the character well. There's likely to be a very, very interesting development from one film to the next with that character.

MTV News: There have been some rumors of a sequel in the works, and though nothing's official at this point, is this a world you'd like to return to down the road?

Branagh: I'm still so in the midst of the "Thor" experience that it's impossible to see anything other than simply finishing the delivery of it. We've been going around the world and getting fantastic reactions, and the thing I've been so pleased with is the number of people who have been surprised with how much they enjoyed the movie -- because it wasnt' necessarily what they expected or wasn't a character they knew. I'm also thrilled about the consistent delight in the humor of the film, and necessarily and sort of triumphantly, the emergence of Chris Hemsworth as a really significant actor here in the role of Thor. So all of those things are hugely exciting, but we only just opened in Australia, and we're opening in the UK as we speak, but given this is where we made it and where the comics come from, it's going to be phenomenally important how we do here in the U.S. So, being the Irish superstitious man that I am, I'm not going to even think about "Thor 2" until -- and if -- we are lucky enough to have the right kind of audience for "Thor 1."

Head over to MTV Splash Page for more from Kenneth Branagh on how Thor changed from comic book to screen, which scene "Avengers" director Joss Whedon was involved in and more from our "Thor" interview!

It's Summer Movie Preview Week, and MTV News will be bringing you exclusive interviews, clips and photos for the most anticipated films of the coming months. Get ready to gorge on inside looks at "Captain America," "The Hangover Part II," "X-Men: First Class," "Cowboys & Aliens" and more.

Britney Spears Has Created 'Her Own Genre,' Dr. Luke Says

Femme Fatale producer tells MTV News the pop star defies categorization because she's 'forward-thinking.'
By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Matt Elias

Since Britney Spears emerged on the scene nearly a decade and a half ago, she's run the gamut of pop music: from sugary bubble-gum to dirty, sexy dance tracks. In that respect, her longtime collaborator and Femme Fatale producer Dr. Luke says that the superstar has in many respects become bigger than pop. In fact, he says it's hard to confine her to just one genre.

"I feel like Britney kind of has her own genre: If you look at songs like 'Toxic' and 'Piece of Me' and 'Oops! ... I Did It Again,' they all were sort of influential and led the way," he told MTV News on Thursday (April 28) at the ASCAP Pop Music Awards.

So when the pair sat down to work on her latest release, Dr. Luke said her pop-music shape-shifting was very much on his mind. "She wanted to keep on with that and do stuff that was forward-thinking," he continued. "So we put some dubstep stuff in there, in bridges; snuck it in different places and I hope it ended up good. I hope you like it."

It seems every time Spears drops a new album, it's declared her comeback record. But Dr. Luke noted that Brit has really never gone anywhere. "Where'd she go? I don't know. I didn't know she ever disappeared, really," he said. "She's always been selling out concerts and records, so I don't know that she ever disappeared."

So what do Spears and Luke have up their sleeve now? "Not yet ... give me a second to breathe, come up for air!" he told us.

Plus, even with Femme Fatale already in stores, it seems like the pair are always finding ways to update the songs. Take, for example, the recent remix of "Till the World Ends," which features Ke$ha (the track's songwriter) and Nicki Minaj.

"Well, we already had Ke$ha on the song 'cause she co-wrote the song ... and she sounded really good on it," Dr. Luke explained. "And then Nicki got on the Femme Fatale Tour so we put Nicki on it and it just sounded amazing. She killed it."

Which version of "Till the World Ends" do you prefer? Tell us in the comments!

Vanessa Hudgens 'Fell In Love' With 'Moulin Rouge'

MTV News will revisit Baz Luhrmann's 2001 movie musical Monday.
By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Kara Warner

Vanessa Hudgens

Vanessa Hudgens knows the power of the movie musical. She starred in two uber-successful "High School Musical" movies and played Mimi in "Rent." So, if anyone can speak to the undeniable influence of Baz Luhrmann's 2001 movie musical masterpiece, "Moulin Rouge," it's her.

"Oh my goodness! It was just a beautiful, very specific look that I feel like everybody could completely submerge themselves into," she told MTV News about the film before Monday's upcoming "Moulin Rouge at 10: A Spectacular Spectacular MTV News Event." "And it was fun, and it was thrilling, and your heart just went out for these characters. I fell in love with the movie, and I have not stopped watching it since."

Hudgens' "Sucker Punch" co-star Jena Malone immediately drew comparisons between "Moulin Rouge" and their equally fantastical flick, thanks to their musical scores. "It's an interesting segue because Marius [de Vries] also did the music for 'Moulin Rouge' and he did the music for 'Sucker Punch,' and he does such crazy abstractions," she said. "I mean, Baz Luhrmann's incredible."

MTV News will reunite Luhrmann, and the movie's stars, Nicole Kidman and Ewan McGregor, on Monday at 3 p.m. ET on MTV.com. The director and actors will be joined by co-star John Leguizamo, who played artist Toulouse-Lautrec, and Catherine Martin, who won the Oscar for costume design and art direction. Hosted by MTV News' Josh Horowitz, the live stream will include special appearances and live interviews while looking back at how the film came to be and how its legacy continues to grow.

Don't miss "Moulin Rouge at 10: A Spectacular Spectacular MTV News Event" on Monday at 3 p.m. ET on MTV.com! Get in the conversation by tweeting @MTVNews with the hashtag #AskMoulin.

New Led Zeppelin On The Way? Jason Bonham Hints At 'Jam' Sessions With Jimmy Page -- But Not Robert Plant

Drummer admits he doesn't know what will come of 'new material.'
By Chris Harris

Jason Bonham
Photo: Larry Marano/ Getty Images

On Friday morning, mere hours before he was due to take the stage with classic rockers Foreigner at Detroit's GM Renaissance Center, drummer Jason Bonham — the son of late Led Zeppelin kitman John Bonham — told Jim Johnson and Lynne Woodison of local rock station 94.7 WCSX that he'd be an ex-member of Foreigner as of September 1. But that's not the only thing he said.

Much to the delight of Led Zeppelin fans everywhere, Bonham revealed that he's been meeting up with Led Zep guitarist Jimmy Page and bassist John Paul Jones in recent months and that they've been "trying to do some new material and writing."

It was the first time since Led Zeppelin announced they would re-form for a single performance (which happened late last year at London's O2 Arena, in honor of the late Ahmet Ertegün, who signed the band to Atlantic Records in 1969) that anyone connected to the band has confirmed publicly that new music could be on the horizon for the iconic rockers. While the bandmembers have stopped short of definitively ruling out such a reunion, singer Robert Plant insisted in the wake of last year's show that he intended to focus on promoting and touring behind his critically lauded album with bluegrass artist Alison Krauss, Raising Sand.

Not that Bonham knows what — if anything — will happen with the new material he's been working on with Page (who collaborated with pop singer Leona Lewis on an uneven version of Zep's "Whole Lotta Love" at the Olympic closing ceremonies in Beijing on Sunday night) and Jones. He said he just shows up and takes his seat behind the kit.

"I've been over [to England] a couple of times," Bonham said. "I've been working with Jimmy and John Paul and trying to do ... some new material and some writing. I don't know what it will be, but it will be something. At the moment, all I know is I have the great pleasure to go and jam with the two guys and start work on some material. When I get there, I never ask any questions. If I get a phone call to go and play, I enjoy every moment of it. Whatever it ends up as, to ever get a chance to jam with two people like that, it is a phenomenal thing for me. It's my life. It's what I've dreamed about doing."

He said it's still too early to tell what will become of these "jam" sessions, but admitted that the "possibility of doing something is in the cards. I really felt it was in the cards from the moment we walked offstage at the O2." Bonham also explained that, before there could be a Led Zep LP, "lots of politics [would need to] get ironed out," but added that recording with Zep is "something I've always wanted to do."

Bonham noticeably didn't mention frontman Plant's name during the discussion. A spokesperson for Page's management had no comment on the matter, and a spokesperson for Jones' management could not be reached by press time.

Britney Spears Drops Official 'Till The World Ends' Remix

New track with Nicki Minaj, Ke$ha follows leaked version, plus Brit tweets single's cover art.
By Jocelyn Vena

The "Till the World Ends" Femme Fatale remix
Photo: Jive

Just days after it was leaked on Friday, Britney Spears and her femme fatales, Nicki Minaj and Ke$ha, dropped their official remix of "Till the World Ends."

The new version of the song was produced by Dr. Luke and Dream Machine. Brit half-whispers " 'Till the World Ends' remix" before the beat kicks in and Nicki hits her verse hard. She spits fierce lines like, "Sniff, sniff, cries/ I done slayed your whole entire f---ing life."

Then Britney's sex-kitten vocals kick in for the song's first verse. "That's Britney, bitch! I'm Nicki Minaj and that's Ke$ha," the Queens MC declares before K sings the chorus. The beat is harder, the loops are sassier and the song is grimier than the original version, which was the second single from Femme Fatale. The newly added dubstep portion takes the one from "Hold It Against Me" to a new level by adding in bass-heavy synths.

Ke$ha, of course, wrote the track for Britney, and the ladies certainly don't seem to mind sharing the spotlight with each other. The official track isn't much different than the version that leaked over the weekend, though Spears did have something brand-new to share with her fans just as the song dropped on iTunes and streamed on her website.

Spears tweeted the artwork for the single, which features the original press photo of Spears along with separate photos of Nicki on the left and Ke$ha on the right. Spears wrote, "@NickiMinaj @Keshasuxx Too much fierceness for one cover! Thanks for lending your voices girls... #TTWEREMIX — Brit"

Spears and Minaj have been hanging out a lot in the lead-up to their summer tour. They hung out at the Factory nightclub on Friday night after Minaj's show in Los Angeles. Spears later wrote, "Early rehearsal after a late night with my girl @NickiMinaj. Can't WAIT to get out on the road with you."

Michael Jackson Estate Rakes In $310 Million To Date

Singer left behind more than $400 million in debt.

Between album sales, movie profits, licensing arrangements and lucrative deals for Cirque du Soleil shows, the estate of late King of Pop Michael Jackson has raked in more than $300 million since the singer's shocking death in June 2009.

According to TMZ, legal documents released on Thursday reveal that executors of MJ's estate have managed to make a major dent in the more than $400 million in debt that Jackson owed at the time of his death.

The first accounting from the executors shows that they have already spent around $159 million paying back various debts, income taxes and other expenses, which include providing support for the pop star's mother, Katherine Jackson, as well as his three young children.

"Although there remain unresolved creditor claims, pending litigation and additional challenging business, tax and legal issues, and the estate is not yet in a condition to be closed, the executors have made substantial progress in reducing the estate's debt," the documents state, according to a Reuters report. Two of Jackson's longtime confidants, attorney John Branca and music executive John McClain, were named as administrators in a will sign by the pop icon.

In addition to paying to make "substantial improvements" to the Jackson family's Havenhurst estate in Encino, California, the executors also spent an undetermined amount of money on "last illness and funeral and memorial service expenses." Those costs included a $900,000 payment to the Forest Lawn Memorial cemetery where Jackson is buried and $35,000 on expenses described as "costume for memorial."

TMZ reported that not only did the famously cash-strapped Jackson have more than $400 million in debt, but his estate also owed more than $40 million to concert promoter AEG tied to the scuttled This Is It Tour, for which MJ was rehearsing when he died unexpectedly. They've also paid $27.2 million in taxes and $4 million in mortgage payments on Jackson's properties.

Despite the solid sales of the Michael album and millions of units of the singer's back catalog being sold, as well as the box office of the "This Is It" movie and DVD sales, the estate is not nearly out of the woods. TMZ noted that the administrators have received more than 65 creditors' claims, some of which are subject to "extremely high" interest rates, and there are several outstanding lawsuits against the estate in several countries.

Beyonce's 'Run The World (Girls)' To Hit Radio, iTunes Thursday

Singer has also posted a 17-second video teaser on her website.
By James Dinh

A demo version of Beyoncé's new single "Run the World (Girls)" may have made the rounds online earlier this week, and now the singer will unveil the official version sooner than expected.

According to a press release, the club-ready tune, which samples Major Lazer's "Pon de Floor," will hit radio airwaves and iTunes worldwide on Thursday.

Produced by Switch, Beyoncé and Shea Taylor, "Run the World (Girls)" is the lead single from the pop star's yet-untitled fourth studio album. Like her previous smash "Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It)," the singer wrote the girl-power anthem with the help of R&B mastermind The-Dream.

If that weren't enough to appease fans' appetites, the entertainer has also released a 17-second video teaser called the "B Revolution" on her website. The teaser, which appears to be a taste of the song's forthcoming video, begins with a shot of a sunset, a rusty dark car with the word "Revolution" painted on it and a shredded newspaper. B soon appears in an all-white ensemble on top of a horse, which lifts its legs high in the air. The clip appropriately ends with the singer's new "B" logo and the iTunes release message.

While not much is known about the video plot for "Run the World (Girls)," MTV News was lucky enough to speak with the clip's director, Francis Lawrence, on Sunday. "The video's for the songs 'Girls'; it's off her new album," he confirmed. "She would probably have me shot if I said anything. ... Some stuff spilled out, but she wasn't happy about it, so I've been sworn to secrecy."

Despite Lawrence's attempt to stay mum on details, the director revealed that the clip will be a standout among the singer's videography. "It'll be big. It'll probably be one of the bigger Beyoncé music videos ever done," he said. "And I can say that I think the song is unbelievable."

Ke$ha Postpones Japan Tour Dates

Ne-Yo, Cyndi Lauper continue to perform in the country following earthquake.
By Gil Kaufman

As the people of Japan continue to struggle with recovering from the nation's devastating earthquake and tsunami, some artists are being forced to cancel their tour dates in the nation. Ke$ha released a statement on Monday announcing that she would have to postpone her upcoming dates in Japan.

"My heart is with Japan right now through this disaster and these hardships," the singer wrote on her website. "I genuinely don't think right now would be appropriate timing for me to perform in Japan given the content and the spirit of my show, which is all about feeling exuberant, rowdy, and wild. ... I plan to bring my party there and to that part of the world when we are all ready to dance and Get $leazy together again. In the meantime I am going to do everything I can to help relief efforts and I encourage everyone in the world to do the same."

In the meantime, Ke$ha has a string of North American dates kicking off on April 1 with a show in Clarion, Pennsylvania, and running through early May.

According to Billboard, the promoter of the scotched Japanese tour, Creativeman Productions, also announced that it would be canceling a pair of its annual spring festivals. The Springgroove, an R&B, soul and hip-hop festival scheduled for April 2 near Tokyo and April 3 in Osaka, would have featured Nelly and Flo Rida, among others. Also called off was then annual hardcore Punkspring festival on April 1 and 2 in Osaka and Nagoya with headliners Good Charlotte and Hoobastank.

Ne-Yo continued with his planned dates in Japan over the weekend, performing a show in Nagoya on Friday and launching a charity initiative to help the people of the country. Called "Spread Love Through Music," the show included donation boxes at the concert to help those in need and the sale of a special wristband with proceeds going to earthquake relief. He plans to do the same during his shows on Tuesday (March 22) in Yokohama and Thursday in Tokyo. "You can absolutely spread love through music, and I think that's what's absolutely called for in this time of crisis," he said in a video on his website.

Also currently touring Japan is Cyndi Lauper, who is slated to play a show in Osaka on Tuesday and was in the country promoting her Memphis Blues album when the quake hit on March 11. She's been tweeting about her experience all along, and on Monday, she wrote about the healing power of music in the shattered country.

"Miss my family but have my music family and the warmth of the peeps I sing to. Tonight I will lose myself in the music and the rhythm," she wrote. Like Ne-Yo, she is asking fans to donate cash at the shows to earthquake relief and is donating all royalties from sales of her Blues album in Japan to the Japanese Red Cross.

Britney Spears Tour Invite 'Is Such An Honor,' Nervo Say

Aussie DJ duo tell MTV News they're ready to 'spread the Nervo love' on Femme Fatale tour.
By Jocelyn Vena

Nervo's Mim and Liv will be joining Britney Spears this summer for her highly anticipated Femme Fatale tour, alongside Nicki Minaj and Jessie and the Toy Boys.

When the Aussie twins spoke to MTV News on Tuesday, the same day the tour lineup was announced, they seemed genuinely surprised by the news, calling the slot "such an honor."

"We have worked with her team of people for songwriting camps and stuff like that, but we've never met Britney. It's been a dream to have one of our record productions on her album, but we didn't get there this time," Mim said.

All the acts on the tour are female, so Liv thinks "it's going to be ladies night every night. I imagine we'll be playing some of our club releases," she added of Nervo's set. "It'll be a DJ set and very electronic and house-based. We're really excited to be able to warm everyone up with some sexy house music."

The girls are also excited about the prospect of meeting Britney. "I wonder if I'll be starstruck? I just love her. I just love her records. She always releases great pop records. I really respect her," Mim said.

"You hear rumors that [the openers] never really get to meet [the main acts]," Liv said. "I hope we get to hang out. We've been told we're going to be on an RV for a lot of it. I love the whole experience of being on a tour bus. I love the road."

Since the tour seems to be all about girl power, the two sassy ladies explained what makes them such femme fatales. "I guess we have a no-fear attitude," Mim said. "We don't let our being girls stop us. Certainly DJing is a very male-dominated [field], and we haven't let us being girls stop us."

Bottom line: They're hoping through their house-music set they can "spread the Nervo love."

Ja Rule Talks About How Prison Bid Will Affect His Family

'I'm mad at myself,' multiplatinum rapper says during MTV News' 'RapFix Live.'

Ja Rule is set to turn himself in for a two-year prison bid in June but still found the time to visit MTV News' "Rap Fix Live." Rule, who pleaded guilty to attempted criminal possession of a weapon after a 2007 gun bust in NYC, sat with Sway and expressed regret, feeling like he let his wife and kids down.

"I'm disappointed," the multiplatinum rapper said. "I'm mad at myself."

Rule spoke specifically on his 15-year-old daughter Brittany, but expressed concern about his two sons as well. "My daughter, she's 15 right now," Rule explained. "These are her last couple of years. She's about to graduate from high school, and she's going to college. She needs her father. My boys really need me right now too, as well as my wife. They need Daddy, and Daddy f---ed up."

Still, despite his upcoming jail stint, Ja was remarkably upbeat and looked for the positive in the situation, hoping youngsters will use him as an example and leave guns alone. "This is something that's bad, but there's gotta be some good that comes out of it," he said. "Even if there are other kids that look at me and say, 'Let me put my burner down.' Even if it's that, then there is something learned from my mistakes."

His upcoming jail stay will mark the first that the former Murder Inc. star has been incarcerated, but he has already received advice from an old friend and reputed drug lord Kenneth "Supreme" McGriff, who is currently serving life behind bars." I spoke to Preme two weeks ago," Ja said. "He let me know about my bid goin' in; how to bid. I never bidded, so you gotta know how to bid."

Rule — who also plans to release his new album Pain Is Love 2 on June 7, the day before he is scheduled to start his two-year prison term — hopes he can be out in as little as 16 months with good behavior.

Lady Gaga To Perform On 'Saturday Night Live'

Sources tell MTV News she'll appear alongside Justin Timberlake on May 7.

When Justin Timberlake returns to host "Saturday Night Live" next month, none other than Lady Gaga will join him as musical guest during the May 7 show. A source confirmed the booking to MTV News, though no official confirmation has come though from "SNL" reps.

Gaga last appeared on the show in October 2009 in what went down as one very memorable episode. Gaga and Madonna poked fun at pop-star rivalries during the sketch "Deep House Dish," where they had a catfight and nearly kissed.

That night, Gaga performed two songs: a high-concept take on "Paparazzi" and a piano-driven performance of her dance track "LoveGame." She later appeared in a sketch alongside Andy Samberg, when both of them wore her famous bubble dress.

Being that this latest appearance comes just as Gaga is dropping her May 23 album release Born This Way, there's a good chance she'll perform lead singles "Born This Way" and "Judas." Or, as she's known to do, she might just dazzle fans with a brand-new track.

This is the latest promotional appearance announced for the album, including a May 27 appearance on "Good Morning America" that will kick off the show's summer concert series and the May 7 premiere of Gaga's highly anticipated HBO special, which was taped at New York's Madison Square Garden in February. She also just wrapped up work on her video for "Judas," though no date has been set for its release.

What are you expecting from Gaga's return trip to "SNL"? Let us know in the comments!

Beyonce Drops Official Version Of 'Run The World (Girls)'

In the first single off her upcoming album, B warns the haters that she's in charge.

Beyoncé dropped the official version of her new single "Run the World (Girls)" on Thursday morning (April 21). The track is just under four minutes of sassy, girl-power lyrics paired with marching-band beats and club appeal.

The song is loud and proud in its relentless message: Beyoncé and girls everywhere are in charge now. B is clearly rallying the troops to her side in this first single off her forthcoming summer album release.

"Girls, we run this motha," she announces at the song's opening. Soon, the beat takes off and looped Auto-Tuned vocals complement Beyoncé's feel-good call and response of "Who run the world? Girls."

The verses that follow sound like a warning to any of the haters. "Some of them men think they freak this like we do/ But no they don't/ Make your checks come at they neck/ Disrespect us, no they won't/ This goes out to all my girls that's in the club rocking the latest/ Who will buy it for themselves and get more money later," Beyoncé sings in a choppy, emphatic style.

"I think I need a barber/ None of these ho's can fight me/ I'm so good with this/ I remind you I'm so 'hood with this," she goes on, before briefly transitioning to smoother, more persuasive, but still boastful vocals.

The song is a cleaned-up version of the demo that leaked earlier this week. It was produced by Switch, Beyoncé and Shea Taylor. Beyoncé also co-wrote the track with The-Dream.

Though there's still no word on when the video might drop, its director, Francis Lawrence, has made it clear that the video (which was teased on Wednesday) will be epic. "It'll be big, it'll probably be one of the bigger Beyoncé music videos ever done," he explained. "And, I can say that I think the song is unbelievable."

30 Seconds To Mars: Rock's Perpetual Motion Machine

One day before our '30 Seconds to Mars: State of the Union' live stream, Bigger Than the Sound gives the band some much-earned respect.
By James Montgomery

At some point, you're probably going to have to give 30 Seconds to Mars some respect. Do it begrudgingly, backhandedly, howeverly — just do it. Because they've earned it.

And yes, I realize this is coming from the same guy who described their This Is War album as "a gigantic silver weather balloon ... massive and shiny, but also cold and empty," but what can I say? I've changed my mind. Mostly because, for nearly two years now, I've witnessed them will themselves back from the brink, and, in the process, transform what many had considered little more than a vanity project into a genuine rock-and-roll phenomenon, one that runs on little more than pure commitment and saves souls each and every time it takes the stage. 30 Seconds to Mars may never be the coolest band in the world, but they're certainly the most dedicated.

In April 2009, I got a glimpse of that dedication firsthand when I went to Jared Leto's home studio to watch them work on War, despite the fact they were still embroiled in a lawsuit that meant the album may never see the light of day. That didn't bother Leto, who told me without hesitation that fans would be able to hear the album "even if I have to go door-to-door selling it."

At the time, I probably laughed (to myself, of course), but Leto's commitment to finishing the album was legit. He redesigned his studio to Flood's exact specifications, and even added a refrigerator-sized synthesizer the producer had played on Depeche Mode's Violator album. He brought in Tibetan monks, flew to Kanye West's studio in Hawaii and held fan-only "recording experiments." And he did all this on his own dime, despite knowing how ridiculous it seemed to the outside world, because he wanted to.

It probably should've occurred to me that most bands don't operate in this fashion, but it didn't. It was only as the months rolled on, when 30 Seconds to Mars opened up communal spaces on Melrose Avenue, stared down bomb threats and continued their tradition of making thoroughly epic music videos that I started to come around. It wasn't until November, when Leto gave me an impromptu screening of his ambitious "Hurricane" film — the same one that had been delayed for months while he and a team of editors attempted to rein it in while in the midst of a world tour — that it all clicked: This is a band unlike any other, a perpetual motion machine powered by the unrelenting willpower of its three members and a team of associates, a traveling community that never stops moving, either because it can't or, more probably, because it won't.

Of course, that begs the question: How can 30 Seconds to Mars possibly keep this up? On Thursday at 6 p.m. ET on MTV.com, we'll get an answer when the band stops by the MTV Newsroom for a "State of the Union" live stream, an hour-long chat in which they'll answer questions from fans and discuss the past, present and future of the band. You should tune in, even if you're still withholding judgment on 30STM themselves — mostly because it'll give you a glimpse into what makes them tick: their dedication ... to their fans, to the spirit of rock and roll, to doing things the way bands are supposed to do them.

Simply put, they work harder and longer than you could possibly imagine, for the purest reason possible: Because they owe it to their fans to do so. Every band loves its fanbase, for sure, but none go to the lengths and excesses 30 Seconds to Mars do to prove that point. And if that's not worth your respect, it's certainly worth noting.

Don't miss the "30 Seconds to Mars: State of the Union" live stream Thursday at 6 p.m. ET on MTV.com. Get in the conversation by tweeting with the hashtag @ask30STM!
