Occupy Romney Rally: Protesters Crash Florida Campaign Stop

'At this point, it really doesn't matter who you're voting for, because you're picking between a lesser of two evils,' an Occupy protester tells MTV News.

DUNEDIN, Florida — As MTV's Power of 12 tagged along with the Mitt Romney campaign on Monday, we saw three very pumped-up, supportive crowds who knew just when to put their hands together for the former Massachusetts governor.

As the crowd shuffled out of picturesque Pioneer Park on Monday afternoon, college student and waiter Adam Rezendes, 24, was feeling pretty confident about whom he was going to cast a vote for in Tuesday's (January 31) Florida primary. "I am going to be voting for Mitt Romney," he said. "I believe in Mitt's conservative views and [his desire] to stop the federal spending and repeal Obamacare. He's got a lot of great views that really appeal to me. ... I trust the country in his hands more than any other candidate."

At the same time, some members of the Occupy movement were facing off with Romney supporters who took umbrage to the sign they were toting which read, "Dear Mr. 1% Go Fire Yourself. Love, The People. Not Corporations."

Recent high school graduate Emily Rogers, 19, has been staying with her friends in Occupy Tampa after logging time with Occupy Orlando, and she was definitely not there to support the GOP front-runner. Rogers had made the trip a few days earlier to attend Friday's hearing on the state's controversial new voter-registration laws.

And while she didn't agree with Romney's take on the legacy of the Obama administration, Rogers wasn't necessarily throwing in with anyone else, either.

"At this point, it really doesn't matter who you're voting for, because you're picking between a lesser of two evils," she said. "Which, in my opinion, is not how the government should run when it's supposed to be for the people. You can line them all up like bricks next to each other, but one is really not that much better than another. You're picking from red-orange to orange to yellow-orange, and those are your options."

As discouraged as she was about her choices for president, Rogers said she was even more concerned about the raft of states with new voting laws she fears could dissuade young voters from coming out to the polls this year. "The voter suppression laws will definitely have an impact on students and young people," she said, noting that college kids who have changed dorms and not updated their address on their voter registration could find their votes invalidated.

"Your vote won't even count. Students that have that knowledge, they don't even want to go out and vote because they think, 'Well, my vote's not going to count anyways, so whey even vote?' "

<P><P>Britney Spears spent the weekend celebrating her <a href="/news/articles/1676120/britney-spears-is-engaged.jhtml">engagement to Jason Trawick</a> in Las Vegas with friends and family. On Friday, hours after the news of their impending marriage was confirmed, the singer took to her Facebook page to make it official, changing her <a href="https://www.facebook.com/britney" target="_blank">relationship status</a> to "engaged." </p><div class="player-placeholder right" id="vid:720382" width="240" height="211"></div><p> She also shared with her fans on Twitter just how excited she is to be tying the knot with longtime boyfriend Trawick. "Still glowing!" she <a href="http://twitter.com/britneyspears" target="_blank">wrote</a>. "About to jump on a plane to Planet Hollywood in Vegas. Throwing a Bday Party for Jason at Chateau Night Club. So fun. Xxoo. And celebrate they did. <a href="http://www.people.com/people/article/0,,20554744,00.html" target="_blank">People.com</a> reported that the couple and her two sons checked into Planet Hollywood before making their first public appearance since the news broke. Spears rocked not only a body-hugging Herv&#233; L&#233;ger bandage dress, but also her Neil Lane engagement ring. The couple shared dinner and dancing at two Sin City hotspots, Sugar Factory's Chocolate Lounge and Paris' Chateau Nightclub. "Tonight was one of the most magical nights of my life," she later wrote on Twitter. "Such an amazing time with my new fiance and our closest friends and family. #Blessed" While Spears was celebrating, her ex-husband Kevin Federline sent out his well-wishes. "I'm really happy for her &#8212; I think he's a great guy," he told <a href="http://tvweek.ninemsn.com.au/blog.aspx?blogentryid=963715&showcomments=true" target="_blank"><i>TV Week</i> magazine</a> while filming the reality show "Excess Baggage" in Australia. "She's happy; she's doing really well. I want to say she's in a good place. I haven't spoken to her much since I've been over here, both of us have been busy with her being on tour, but I do know from talking to the kids and talking to the kids' teachers that they're doing really good. It's a good step in the right direction. I'm totally happy for her." And Federline doesn't seem to have any hard feelings toward Trawick. "He's a really good guy, I've heard a lot about him," he added. "I've spoken to him quite a few times as of now. He seems like a really good guy. The kids speak highly of him [and] her family loves him." <div style="background-color:#000000;width:428px;"><div style="padding:4px;"><embed src="http://media.mtvnservices.com/mgid:uma:video:mtv.com:702567/cp~id%3D1672881%26vid%3D702567%26uri%3Dmgid%3Auma%3Avideo%3Amtv.com%3A702567" width="420" height="236" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowFullScreen="true" allowScriptAccess="always" base="." flashVars=""></embed></div></div> <i>Share your well-wishes for Britney and Jason in the comments!</i></p></p>

Britney Spears' Big 2011: From A Smash Album To A Ring On Her Finger

A decade into her career, the pop megastar reinvented herself this year as the ultimate Femme Fatale and made a big commitment to Jason Trawick.
By Jocelyn Vena

<P>Maybe <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/spears_britney/artist.jhtml">Britney Spears</a>' lucky number is 30. The singer turned 30 this year, marking the landmark birthday on December 2 with a fan-voted MTV News tournament that crowned <a href="/news/articles/1675289/britney-spears-tournament-winner-30th-birthday.jhtml">the Best Britney Video of All Time</a>. But her 30th year also proved to be an incredibly successful period in her career. <center><embed src="http://media.mtvnservices.com/mgid:uma:video:mtv.com:720934/cp~vid%3D720934%26uri%3Dmgid%3Auma%3Avideo%3Amtv.com%3A720934" width="460" height="260" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowFullScreen="true" allowScriptAccess="always" base="."></embed></center> For the first time in a while, she seemed comfortable being the pop megastar that she is. More than a decade into her career, Spears re-emerged as a <a href="/news/articles/1675474/britney-spears-femme-fatale-favorite-album.jhtml"><i>Femme Fatale,</i></a> giving fans a fist-pumping album, embarking on a flashy tour and dropping more memorable music videos. Britney Spears fandom was reenergized as the singer came out of her shell, opening up about this phase in her career as well her personal life in several high-profile interviews. So it's probably not surprising that Spears will cap off the year at #4 on MTV News' <a href="/news/articles/1676177/newsmakers-2011-lady-gaga-amy-winehouse.jhtml">Top Newsmakers of 2011</a> list, just behind Lil Wayne. "When I was younger, I was busy, busy, and I was always singing and dancing all the time. I was just really creative," she recalled in the <a href="http://www.mtv.com/videos/news/638813/britney-hits-the-studio-with-william.jhtml#id=166112">MTV special "I Am the Femme Fatale."</a> "That's when my mom realized I'm a really creative person." She let that creativity shine over the past 12 months. From <a href="http://www.mtv.com/videos/britney-spears/624145/hold-it-against-me.jhtml#artist=501686">"Hold It Against Me"</a> to <a href="http://www.mtv.com/videos/britney-spears/639722/till-the-world-ends.jhtml#artist=501686">"Till the World Ends"</a> to her Chris Marrs Piliero-directed "I Wanna Go" and "Criminal," Britney made headlines every time she dropped a music video. But no vid stirred up as much controversy as her <a href="/news/articles/1672795/britney-spears-criminal-video-director.jhtml">"Criminal" clip</a>, which featured real-life boyfriend <a href="/news/articles/1676120/britney-spears-is-engaged.jhtml">(now fianc&#233;) Jason Trawick</a> &#8212; and his abs. "At the end of the day, Jason killed it," Piliero told MTV News of Trawick's cameo. "That was one of those things I was really stoked [about], as much as I went into it like, 'Wow, he's not an actor. This is going to be interesting,' but I really do like a challenge, and I really do like the idea that I'm a director and my job is to direct and get the performance. For me, it was a fun challenge to be like, 'I'm gonna make sure that you are awesome,' and he was." Between video shoots, Spears hit the road with <a href="/news/articles/1668836/nicki-minaj-britney-spears-tour.jhtml">the likes of Nicki Minaj</a>, Joe Jonas, and DJ Pauly D. Spears fully embraced her sensuality on the <i>Femme Fatale</i> Tour, a spectacular show full of costume changes, elaborate stage setups and stunning mini-films. </p><div class="player-placeholder right" id="vid:638813.id:1661123" width="240" height="211"></div><p> And while much of the 2011 VMA buzz was about <a href="/news/articles/1669849/beyonce-pregnant-vmas.jhtml">Beyonc&#233;'s baby bump</a> and <a href="/news/articles/1669843/lady-gaga-you-and-i-video-music-awards-performance.jhtml">Jo Calderone</a>, Spears stole the spotlight by walking away with a Moonman for Best Pop Video and the prized <a href="/news/articles/1669873/britney-spears-vma-tribute.jhtml">Video Vanguard Award</a>. She also had tongues wagging after an onstage kiss from Jo (a.k.a. Lady Gaga), just before she was honored with an electrifying dance tribute that highlighted some of biggest career moments. "It was really crazy. I had no idea what to expect," Spears told us backstage at the VMAs. "The kids were amazing and so entertaining, and it was a really fun night. It was really cool. I was like, 'Wow, that's really sweet!' " As 2011 came to a close, Spears wrapped up her tour, and MTV News threw her a birthday bash in the form of the <a href="http://www.mtv.com/content/news/2011/britney30/index.jhtml">"30 Videos for 30 Years"</a> tournament. The competition was heated but in the end, Spears' iconic "I'm a Slave 4 U" took home the prize. And just when it seemed things couldn't get any better, <a href="/news/articles/1676167/britney-spears-jason-trawick-engaged-timeline.jhtml">Britney confirmed she was engaged</a> to Trawick after dating for two years. She showed off her Neil Lane ring during a celebratory weekend in Las Vegas. <b>MTV continues our <a href="http://www.mtv.com/specials/best_of/">Best of 2011</a> coverage by looking back at the biggest pop-culture stories of the year. Mitt Romney's Grand Entrance And Big Finish Before Florida Primary

Traveling with the GOP presidential hopeful, you will hear the words to 'America the Beautiful' ... a lot.
By Gil Kaufman

Mitt Romney talks to supporters in Florida

DUNEDIN, Florida — "How many times have we heard this song already?" That's what a beat reporter who's been traveling with the Mitt Romney campaign said Monday afternoon (January 30) at the day's second campaign stop in Florida. With less than 24 hours to go before Tuesday's primary, Romney was about to take the stage to the strains of one of his signature warm-up songs, Toby Keith's "Made in America," and the press corps knew what was going to happen next with their notebooks closed.

"I'm gonna wake up in the middle of the night singing it," the reporter sighed as the crowd in Pioneer Park filed in on a picture-perfect winter day. But for the writers and camera people slogging it out on the trail, it was "Groundhog Day" all over again: new town, same routine.

While the patriotic country tune kept pumping, the crowd of several hundred suddenly turned around en masse as Romney's bus pulled up about 15 minutes late. It seems that like college parties, for presidential candidates, it's all about showing up just a bit late — and making a cool entrance.

Fittingly, Romney referred to the Obama administration as the "groundhog presidency," because, the former Massachusetts governor said, "He keeps saying the same thing, but nothing ever changes."

Romney talked about the trips he used to take with his family as a child — including a visit to Florida's Cypress Gardens — but you could feel the press tuning out as they waited for the obligatory recitation of the candidate's favorite lines from "America the Beautiful."

Following a loss in South Carolina last week, Romney was making his final appearances before Tuesday's crucial Florida vote and he seemed loose and spirited, perhaps thanks to the comfortable lead he opened up against rival Newt Gingrich in the polls as the primary approached.

He left the audience with a stark message about the man he wants to ensure is a one-term president. "He didn't cause the recession," Romney said of President Obama. "But he made it worse."

'Game Of Thrones' Trailer: Five Key Scenes

From the Lord of the Light to the Drowned God and beyond, here are five key scenes from the HBO series' new sneak peek.
By Josh Wigler

The night is dark and full of terrors in Westeros, the fantasy land at the heart of "Game of Thrones." But if you thought the HBO fantasy series proved its capacity for brutality and betrayal in season one, just wait: The April-debuting second season — based on George R.R. Martin's second novel in his "Song of Ice and Fire" odyssey, "A Clash of Kings" — promises more blood and dragons than ever before.

A new trailer for "Game of Thrones" season two, which hit HBO last night (January 29) ahead of the network's premiere of the Dustin Hoffman drama "Luck," does more than its fair share to remind you that this isn't your comparatively tame hobbit-filled fantasy story. Keep reading for five key scenes from the latest look at "Thrones."

He Told You Not to Trust Him
"Game of Thrones" has largely remained faithful to Martin's source material, but there have been deviations along the way. Season two looks no different, based on this new trailer that sees grieving widow Catelyn Stark (Michelle Fairley) holding Petyr "Littlefinger" Baelish (Aidan Gillen) at knifepoint. It's a scene that absolutely does not occur in the books, even if it's one that would satisfy a lot of fans' bloodlust toward the loyalty-free Littlefinger. But is it an editing trick or a sizeable new addition? You be the judge!

Lord of the Light
There are several dangerous new players in the world of Westeros come season two, but perhaps no one worth watching quite as much as Stannis Baratheon (Stephen Dillane) and his accomplice, the red priestess Melisandre (Carice van Houten). As worshippers of R'hllor, the God of Flame and Shadow, both Stannis and Melisandre will force many enemies to meet their fiery ends before season two draws to a close. The blaze of glory is briefly teased in this trailer with a look at one of Melisandre's many night rituals.

The Imp and the Spider
The new trailer is bookended by a riddle that spymaster Varys (Conleth Hill) puts forth to Tyrion Lannister (Golden Globe winner Peter Dinklage), now acting as King's Hand on his father Tywin's behalf. It's just one of many memorable interactions between the Spider and the Imp, a crucial new dynamic that's sure to dominate much of season two. And despite his award-winning streak and his pledge that he knows "how the game is played," don't put too much stake in Tyrion's confidence — even the sharpest mind could bend before a king's cruelty. Speaking of which ...

Madness Landing
Westeros is at war, and every city is a battleground. The historic King's Landing is no exception, as the cruel reign of King Joffrey Baratheon (Jack Gleeson) has turned commoner against royalty. It's a cultural shift that Joffrey and his loved ones are deservedly feeling in every possible manner, a shift that Queen Regent Cersei (Lena Headey) faces directly during a pivotal riot teased in the new trailer.

The Drowned God Rises
A fairly unassuming character in season one, Theon Greyjoy (Alfie Allen) becomes one of the most prominent players in the "Thrones" saga this coming season. Here, you see his not-so-triumphant return to the Iron Islands, his homeland he's been separated from for over a decade. Though his loyalties lie with King in the North Robb Stark (Richard Madden) by nurture, Theon believes himself Ironborn by nature — and he'll have to test that very struggle in most desperate ways as "Thrones" embarks on its next string of episodes.

What did you think of the "Game of Thrones" trailer? Let us know in the comments!

<P><P><b>LOS ANGELES</b> &#8212; <a href="/music/artist/spears_britney/artist.jhtml">Britney Spears</a> makes headlines at concerts, even when she's not performing. That's probably why Los Angeles radio station KIIS FM tapped the pop princess to guest-host their annual Wango Tango music festival along with Ryan Seacrest on Saturday night at the Staples Center. </p><div class="player-placeholder right" id="vid:652696" width="240" height="211"></div><p> The bill was a balance of pop and hip-hop, with acts like Ke$ha, Jennifer Lopez, Pitbull, Ne-Yo, Selena Gomez, "Glee" 's Matthew Morrison, Lupe Fiasco, T-Pain, Jason Der&#252;lo, Far East Movement, New Boyz, Cobra Starship and newcomer Cody Simpson. Backstage, the media room went into a frenzy when Spears arrived in a red, geometric-print dress and a beaming smile. Owning her "femme fatale" moniker, Spears worked the carpet for a few moments while all of the cameras in the room were pointing at her. It was the second red carpet appearance by Brit this week, after her Beverly Hills benefit on Wednesday night for <a href="/news/articles/1663732/britney-spears-st-bernard-project.jhtml">the St. Bernard Project</a>. <a href="/photos/keha-britney-spears-selena-gomez-and-many-more-at-wango-tango-2011/1663910/6129255/photo.jhtml"><b>Check out photos from Wango Tango 2011.</b></a> Spears' <i>Femme Fatale</i> collaborator <a href="/news/articles/1639312/justin-bieber-usher-ignite-crowd-at-kiis-fms-wango-tango.jhtml">Ke$ha, who was returning to the festival</a> for the second time, said that an onstage collab between to the two would have to require one thing. "That would have to include me finding her and attacking her," Ke$ha told MTV News, with the best intentions. "I'm planning on pouncing her." While that never happened, at least not onstage, Ke$ha delivered on her promise of a set heavy on her glitter gun. And she assured us she knew the dos and don'ts of handling that kind of firepower. "Do not spray yourself in the face with it," she said. "Do spray everybody else with it. That's pretty much it." While Joe Jonas wasn't performing at the show, he took a break from recording his solo debut to catch up with almost everyone backstage. "I didn't see Britney backstage, just said 'hello' to a couple of my friends," Jonas said. "Backstage is always [full of] people, especially having it at the Staples Center this time, I think compared to all the way out in the desert, it changes everything." Also happy to have Wango Tango in Los Angeles were locals Far East Movement. "Man, we grew up literally a few blocks away from here, and you can only imagine basketball games being played here," Kev Nish said. "So to come in here as performers, to be able to do our songs in this arena is a little crazy. We used to pass out CDs a few blocks [away], so we're very thankful. And the lineup is nuts, so we're extremely excited to be a part of this lineup." <i>Were you at Wango Tango? Share your experience in the comments below!</i></p></p>

Justin Bieber, Mariah Carey Play Santa In 'Christmas' Clip

Bieber debuts 'All I Want for Christmas Is You' video (and performs with Busta Rhymes and Usher) during 'Christmas in Rockefeller Center.'

<P>Deck the halls! The holiday kicked into high gear Wednesday night (November 30) when New York's massive Christmas tree was lit during "Christmas in Rockefeller Center." Plenty of A-listers were on hand, including Justin Bieber, who premiered his highly anticipated <a href="/news/articles/1673689/justin-bieber-mariah-carey-christmas-video.jhtml">video for "All I Want for Christmas Is You,"</a> featuring Mariah Carey. </p><div class="player-placeholder right" id="vid:715720" width="240" height="211"></div><p> Before the strings of lights were illuminated, performances from Michael Bubl&#233;, Katharine McPhee, Big Time Rush, Tony Bennett, Carole King and Neil Diamond warmed viewers up. But Bieber was the headline act of the night, giving fans some big performances and an even bigger video premiere. Bieber amped up the energy with his hip-hop-ified take on the Christmas classic <a href="/news/articles/1673334/justin-bieber-mariah-carey-christmas-song.jhtml">"Little Drummer Boy,"</a> which included him spitting a holiday-themed rhyme. Decked in all black, the teen star had the crowd screaming. He was even joined by Busta Rhymes, who appears on the <i>Under the Mistletoe</i> cut. JB then slowed things down with <a href="/news/articles/1673032/justin-bieber-usher-christmas-song.jhtml">"The Christmas Song (Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire),"</a> leaving his female fans swooning as he crooned the holiday standard. He was joined by his mentor Usher for the track. "God bless and Merry Christmas," Bieber told the crowd before tossing to the "All I Want for Christmas Is You" video. The clip features Mariah Carey dressed in a sexy Santa Claus outfit standing in a department store as she dances around singing the track, almost as if she's on display for holiday shoppers. It also sees Bieber and his pals shopping for some choice holiday gifts like high-top kicks. In between performance shots of Bieber and Mariah, a street-corner Santa Claus hands out envelopes to shoppers on the street, teasing an inevitable yuletide party scene. The shoppers are then welcomed into the department store, where Justin and Mariah hand out gifts to everyone. The duo tease and flirt with each other as everyone around them unwraps their gifts. Bieber and Carey re-recorded her classic holiday tune for his chart-topping holiday album, which also features appearances from the Band Perry and Boyz II Men. They filmed the video earlier this month, just in time for the holiday season. <i>Did Bieber get you in the holiday spirit? Let us know in the comments!</i></p>

Katy Perry Debuts Light-Blue Locks In Vegas

Pop star shows off new 'do at a Las Vegas charity event.

Katy Perry is feeling a little less blue these days. The pop star began rocking an electric-blue bob not long after news broke that husband Russell Brand had filed for divorce late last year. But Perry, who stepped out in Las Vegas this weekend, appears to have dipped her locks in the dye once again.

On Friday night, KP hit a charity event dressed in a beaded frock, her razor-cut 'do colored in a rich turquoise. The party at the Vegas outpost of nightspot 1OAK was hosted by GiveLove.org, an organization devoted to improving public health in Haiti.

But although newly separated Perry reportedly put on a good face, one source told amNewYork the "Waking Up in Vegas" singer seemed "subdued." The pop star "pretty much sat in the same spot the whole night" as her friends danced, according to the source.

While Katy has always been adventurous about her hair hues, post-split, she seems, anecdotally at least, to be hitting the bottle — of dye — with increasing frequency.

Brand and Perry announced the end of their marriage on December 30, after 14 months together. The exes have been a keeping a rather low profile ever since. The comic is set to perform on March 4 at New York's Radio City Music Hall as part of an Amnesty International benefit, while Perry may turn up next at the Grammy awards on February 12, where she's up for two statues. She was spotted earlier this month shooting an Adidas ad, not long after wrapping two concert dates in Indonesia and the Philippines.

'The Grey': The Reviews Are In!

Critics give mostly positive reviews to Liam Neeson's wolf-punching thriller.
By Kevin P. Sullivan

Liam Neeson in "The Grey"
Photo: Open Road Films

For the third January in a row, Liam Neeson returns to kick ass more than any other 59-year-old we know. This time he isn't taking down sex traffickers like in "Taken" or whatever he was fighting in "Unknown." No, this time, it's wolves.

For a movie that was sold on the notion of wolf punching, "The Grey" has received primarily positive reviews for its deeper-than-you'd-think story and characters.

Check out what the critics are saying about "The Grey."

The Story
"We meet Neeson's character, a heartbroken loner named John Ottway, on the verge of suicide and thinking back, obsessively, to the woman who got away. His demons temporarily quelled, Ottway boards a small plane with his fellow refinery workers and in one of the most nerve-racking flights ever put on film, the aircraft runs afoul of bad weather and crashes. (For a turbulence wimp like me, this scene was not easy.)" — Michael Phillips, Chicago Tribune

The Star
"Having paid his quality biopic dues as Oskar Schindler, Michael Collins and Alfred Kinsey, Mr. Neeson has, at least for now, turned to the rougher and perhaps more lucrative work of action heroism. It takes nothing away from his earlier achievements to note that he's really good at it. He conveys a ferocious and absolute seriousness even when the going gets silly, and he finds the soul in each new angry-everyman cipher he is asked to play." — A.O. Scott, New York Times

The Wolves
" 'The Grey' is an unrelenting demonstration that wolves have no opinion. When they attack, it's not personal. They've spent untold millennia learning how to survive, naked and without weapons, in fearsome places like the Arctic Circle in the dead of winter. They aren't precisely unarmed; they have their teeth and claws, but how far would that get us, even if we had rifles?" — Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times

The Director
"We've come, in vain, to see [Neeson] danse-macabre with wolves, and the film's director, Joe Carnahan, provides the occasional horror-film sneak attack. He also manages to create one of the movies' more nightmarish plane crashes and conclude with just the sort of ludicrous finale that paying customers who've seen the ads might assume they would be getting a whole film of." — Wesley Morris, Boston Globe

The Final Word
"For all its macho standoffs and action set pieces and menacing off-screen howling, 'The Grey' is at heart a simple moral fable about how true heroism consists in helping other human beings to live as long and die as well as they can, which is, after all, the task all of us face each day, even when we're not fending off wolves with broken glass duct-taped to our knuckles." — Dana Stevens, Slate

'Avengers' Villain An Infinite Mystery

MTV News speculates on which Marvel Comics baddie will be joining forces with Loki when 'Marvel's The Avengers' assembles this summer.
By Josh Wigler

Photo: Paramount

"Marvel's The Avengers" promises to pit Earth's Mightiest Heroes — Captain America, Iron Man, Thor, Hulk, Black Widow and Hawkeye, in case you've somehow forgotten — against the trickster god Loki, as well as another nemesis that remains unidentified. Popular theories have long pegged the Skrulls, Marvel's shape-shifting alien menace, as the likeliest group to join forces with the disenfranchised Asgardian prince. Many fans are also expecting to see another possible foe, "Captain America" villain Red Skull, based on his inclusion in an upcoming "Avengers" action figure line.

But leave it to Kevin Feige, head of Marvel Studios, to bust both rumors. Speaking with Empire magazine last week, he revealed that the still-unknown secondary baddies are "not Skrulls." Additionally, while it would be nice to see Hugo Weaving's villainous visage at some point down the line, "he's not in this one."

So, no Skrulls. No Red Skull. It's Loki, and it's ... someone or something else. But who or what?

Feige promised that while Marvel wants to hide the identity of "the alien race" that's confronting our favorite superheroes, their identity is "not impactful," even though they exist in the comic books. One imagines, then, that the Kree are out along with the Skrulls. Perhaps it's as simple as a return of the Jotunheim, last seen in 2011's "Thor." Maybe it's just arbitrary and the identity of these aliens truly does not matter.

That doesn't mean the mystery isn't important. And that doesn't mean the aliens are the mystery villain, either.

The < i>Latino Review once put forth a report — one that's unverified by all accounts — stating that Thanos, the hulking purple-skinned alien that's frequently dusted up with the Avengers and other Marvel heroes, is the secret villain we've all been wondering about. It's a rumor to be sure, but it's one I'm inclined to believe for a couple of reasons ... and it all goes back to Comic-Con.

In July 2010, the Marvel booth at Comic-Con featured a display case filled with items from the studio's upcoming comic book movies. Among them: Thor's hammer Mjolnir, Captain America's mighty shield and the bejeweled Infinity Gauntlet. The Gauntlet is one of the more prominent items in the cosmic side of the Marvel Universe, one that's virtually synonymous with Thanos. Indeed, its inclusion in the Marvel display case felt like an unspoken promise that Thanos would someday have a part to play in the company's cinematic future.

Cut to "Thor" almost a year later, and the Gauntlet appeared as a blink-and-you'll-miss-it Easter egg that came and went when Jotunheim thieves infiltrated Asgard to reclaim their long-lost prize, the Casket of Ancient Winters. Could it be that the Gauntlet only existed as a wink and nod to the fans back home? Entirely possible. But what if Loki, who clearly knows the history and value of the Casket, has information on the other items contained in Asgard — including what the Gauntlet is, and who would do anything to have it? For someone mightily pissed off at his brother and the Earth-dwellers he's become so fond of, that's very powerful information indeed.

Consider also that Feige, the same man who kiboshed the Skrulls and Skull, has long said that the cosmic side of Marvel is a big priority for him. In fact, just a few months ago, he revealed that movies based on the "Inhumans" and "Guardians of the Galaxy" were on the docket at Marvel Studios. Fantastic reads both of them, no question, but obscure beyond belief to the non-comic book reader. If Feige is looking ahead at "phase two" of the Marvel plan, as he's called it in the past, are "Inhumans" and "Guardians" really the best places to start?

Perhaps they are ... if someone huge, someone massive, someone like Thanos, makes his first appearance in "Avengers," and lives on to stalk the stars (and the screen) another day.

It's not the meatiest theory out there. It's based on a rumor, on a taste of what Marvel has given us both on and off the screen, and on a desire to see someone important occupy this oh-so-secretive role. For Feige to come out and say the movie's second villainous force is not the Skrulls and not Red Skull, and that Loki's alien army is "not impactful" in identity ... either he's not telling the full story on who or what this unseen enemy represents, or the big reveal is going to be a massive letdown. Given how Marvel has operated in recent years, and given the importance of "Avengers" to their brand and plans, I just don't see it being the latter option.

Here's what I do see. Loki aside, "The Avengers" will have another deeply meaningful foe to fight come May 4, 2012. And my considerably sized gut tells me it's going to be Thanos.

Who do you think the secret "Avengers" villain will be? Tell us in the comments section.

Check out everything we've got on "Marvel's The Avengers."
